Storm Barney blows roof off Acocks Green house

A landlord has told how Storm Barney blew the roof off his property in Acocks Green, with tiles raining down and smashing up a car on the drive.

Brothers Shakeel and Akeel Afsar are counting the cost after the semi-detached rented property felt the full force of the 70mph winds, which brought havoc to the region.

Fortunately no-one was hurt in the incident, but a car on the drive was badly damaged and the four tenants have had to be rehomed.

Shakeel, 27, runs Afsar Holdings Limited with 25-year-old Akeel and the brothers have a portfolio of 80 properties.

Shakeel said: “The winds were so powerful that they blew the roof right off. There was a car parked on the drive which was very badly damaged.

“Fortunately no-one has been injured which we have to be grateful for.

“But there were four people living in the property and we have had to temporarily rehouse them while we carry out the repair work.

“Three fire engines turned up and helped to make the situation safe, I would like to say a big thank you to the firefighters who helped us last night.

“We have felt the full force of Storm Barney but the situation could have been so much worse if there had been injuries.”

Miraculously, no-one was hurt.

The effects of the storm were still being felt on this morning with a clean-up operation underway.
